There’s something about having a child that can make you realize just how important it is to preserve life’s fleeting seasons. A and W reached out during their pregnancy to schedule maternity and newborn photos. We decided on a golden hour beach maternity session and in-home newborn photos. Both sessions provided an opportunity for A and W to slow down, be present, and really soak in these once-in-a-lifetime moments.

Becoming a parent is such an absorbing experience. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day of preparing the nursery or creating a birth plan. While thinking so much about the future is important right now, it can make you lose sight of where you are in your journey.

Bundling maternity and newborn photos ensures that you have beautiful keepsakes from every stage of this journey. You get to take time with your partner to pause in the excitement of anticipating your little one and the wonder of it all when they’ve finally arrived.

Another perk of bundling maternity and newborn photos is that it streamlines things in your third trimester. This part of your pregnancy can feel like it passes in the blink of an eye. Save yourself some stress, and reach out to a photographer once to schedule your maternity and newborn sessions.

I love working with clients on both sessions because I can document their journey to parenthood in a really intentional, cohesive way. We can plan both sessions together so that all the images in their memory books and on their gallery walls feel like continuous parts of one story.

For their maternity photos, A and W wanted to head to the beach. A wore a bright red sweater that stood out beautifully in contrast with the neutral blues and browns of the beach. The color is so rich on film, too.

These maternity photos are tender and nostalgic. Looking at them, you get a sense of A and W being on the edge of a big change, and they’re in it together. Their bond comes through as much as their excitement about their baby. Maternity photos can have their own kind of romance in this way.

While the beach photos have a uniquely Milwaukee feel, the in-home newborn photos give a look into the other side of A and W’s life. You get a sense of the tender newness of this stage of their life.

Because the session is in their home, you also get an intimate sense of how much their world centers on their little one in these early days. It feels like the three of them are their own universe of snuggles and feedings and firsts.

I love documenting maternity and newborn photos like these on film. Film and digital photography each have their pros and cons, but film has a tangible quality that makes it perfect for these messy, beautiful moments. They’re the kinds of days you want to hold onto forever. Film photos are about as close as you can get to that.

I’m so grateful A and W invited me into their world to document these special moments for their growing family. The best times in life can be fleeting, so having images like this to hold onto is invaluable.

These seemingly ordinary moments are some of the most important that you experience as a parent, and those same quiet, slow moments are made for film. Documenting the photo-worthy love in everyday life means you’ll be able to share it with your little one as they grow.
