Milwaukee family photography holds a special kind of joy, especially on film. These lifestyle film photos of R, J, and their family show what’s possible for a cozy session at home. With their joyful, genuine photos, they have keepsakes they’ll be able to share with their kids when they want to remember this season exactly as it was.
In this blog post:

I love being a Milwaukee family photographer. People welcome me into their homes, and I get to see them at their most natural. When I arrived at their house, R, J, and their kids were ready for a cozy morning.

Family photography doesn’t require a picture-perfect home to be meaningful. R and D’s house is kind of a dream, though. They run Dandy, a vintage store and event venue. Their home is beautifully curated with warm wood furniture, beautiful art, and cozy textures. It has a timelessness that makes it a perfect backdrop for family photos.

To set the family at ease, we started the session with something they do often together: storytime in bed. The kids curled up in J’s lap all smiles.

Those little moments tell so much about a family’s story. In this session, I mostly focused on photographing everyday interactions on film. Piggyback rides through the kitchen and cuddle sessions on the couch became images that the family will look back on with joy.

Even though this session was about R and J’s family and not their house, I can’t help but imagine that they’ll enjoy having the home they’ve so lovingly crafted preserved in professional photos. Years from now, the kids’ rooms will evolve. R and J will be able to look back and remember the craft projects and stuffies that adorned their rooms.

In my opinion, Milwaukee family photography looks amazing on film. It’s warm and nostalgic, like your favorite memories of quiet Saturday mornings at home. Like those days, film isn’t always perfect. Light leaks and motion blur can happen. But it’s honest and all the sweeter for it.

The slower nature of film makes it better suited to that pace of a homey experience, too. Each frame requires intention. You get to soak up your time with your little ones while I decide how to preserve the moment with the most organic image possible. I find that my clients get caught up in being together rather than posing for the same photo for several minutes at a time.

If you want photos you can print out and hold in your hand as your children grow, definitely consider a film session. You can have images as golden warm as the moments they preserve. These photos of R, J, and their kids exemplify that perfectly. The photos feel so natural because they are. Film conveys their loving dynamics so well.

You’ve probably noticed by now that very little of this Milwaukee family photography includes posing. While I can include posed portraits if you’re hoping for one to hang on your wall, I take a lifestyle approach to most family sessions.

Lifestyle photography mostly avoids posing in lieu of documenting moments as they really happen. In these photos, you get a sense of what life is actually like for R, J, and their kids. The images are cozy, genuine, and full of personality.

It’s easy to imagine R and J looking back on these photos as their kids grow and remembering not just what their kids did but who they were. Their unique mannerisms and ways of interacting come through so clearly in these photos.

Film lifestyle photography is ideal for sessions with kids because they’re allowed to be themselves. Instead of posing in stiff outfits, they get to play and explore. Their curiosity and laughter come through in the images, and they have a lot more fun in the sessions. (And kids having fun means less stress for parents.)
