Sweet First Birthday Photoshoot for Twins in Milwaukee

A studio session is a great way to document their personalities at this turning point as they enter toddlerhood. Logan and Emmett’s family joined me in a Milwaukee photography studio for a joyful session full of light and laughs.
A First Birthday Photoshoot for Twins
I met Logan and Emmet’s mom at a baby shower that I photographed in the spring. You can check out the film photos from that celebration at Villa Terrace here. She liked my organic approach to documenting milestones. When her twins were ready for their first birthday photoshoot, she reached out for a studio session.
A first birthday photoshoot is such a beautiful idea. As much as we celebrate maternity and newborns with photography sessions, we ought to take time to document other milestones. When your child turns one, you’re not just celebrating their birthday. You’re celebrating how far you’ve come, too.
Emmett and Logan’s first birthday was such a joy to photograph. These two brought so much personality to the session, and their parents embraced it. The family spent time interacting by playing and snuggling. Their parents also gave them time to explore and play together. We ended the session with a cake smash. You can see how happy that made Logan and Emmett!
Tips for a First Birthday Photoshoot
Like most things when it comes to kids, the more prepared you are for a first birthday photoshoot, the better. Logan and Emmett’s parents did a great job of preparing for this session. Here are three things they brought that made the session fun for everyone involved, especially the babies.
1. Outfit changes
Emmett and Logan’s parents brought three outfit changes for the babies. They ranged from dressy to casual. All of the clothes were nice neutrals that coordinated with each other. If either had been resistant to an outfit change, it wouldn’t have derailed the photos’ aesthetics.
2. Favorite toys
Stuffies are great props for milestone photoshoots. They’re comforting for the babies. Just look at how happy these toy dogs make Logan and Emmett! Stuffed animals also become such a big part of how we remember phases of our kids’ lives. Your photos should reflect your baby’s personality and the things they love.
3. Musical instruments.
Musical instruments are perfect for photo sessions in the studio! Drums, rattles, and tambourines are adorable. They let your baby get some energy out and engage in creative play.
A few other items you’ll want to bring to a milestone photoshoot include:
- A playlist of your child’s favorite songs
- Snacks and drinks for yourself as well as the baby
- A cake!
Choosing Studio Photography
This family opted for a studio session for their first birthday photoshoot. I couldn’t love this more. The Milwaukee photography studio I work out of is a beautiful, bright space with plenty of space for kids to run around. They can explore and have their own experience. That’s what makes for the most adorable candid photos.
When I photograph families, I always recommend at least an hour of studio time. As a parent, I know what it’s like to work with small children. It can be a bit chaotic. I’m here to give you the best experience possible. We can work with the ebb and flow of your baby’s moods.
At the end of that hour, you’ll be amazed how beautiful your pictures are. Emmett and Logan brought all that big twin energy to their session, and these photos are so sweet. One of my favorite parts of being a photographer is distilling an event to the most breathtaking moments, the ones that feel truest to you and your family.
