Denise knew she wanted something different when she picked a Milwaukee maternity photographer. She wanted maternity photos that really looked like her. Instead of something extravagant, Denise wanted photos that felt true. 

Eventually, Denise came across one of my blog posts featuring a studio maternity session on film. When we spoke, she stressed how much she likes how real my work feels. She wanted to create photos that are really rooted in this time. I’d say we achieved that!

I’m forever grateful to Denise and her partner Jeremy for having so much faith in me that they drove two and half hours from Steven’s Point to meet me at the studio. We aimed to recreate what she loved about my other maternity photos – authenticity, tenderness, and simplicity.

Denise’s Grounded Maternity Session

As a Milwaukee maternity photographer, I prefer to avoid glamorous photos that make people look like someone else. I believe maternity photos are about documenting you as you are in this exciting (and, yes, sometimes exhausting) period of anticipation.

When Denise and Jeremy arrived for their maternity session, Denise was expecting twins. She wanted photos she could show her kids later on so that they could see what this time was really like for their family. We kept the aesthetics of the session clean and simple. 

Part of my job as a Milwaukee maternity photographer is to hold space for you. During our session, you get to breathe. You can connect with your baby, your partner, and yourself. We don’t get enough chances to do that during pregnancy. Sessions like Denise’s feel so grounding for that reason.

Denise and Jeremy really took to the studio session. They each brought a few changes of clothes. Even though I guided their posing, their expressions are completely genuine. I love the range of emotions you see on Denise’s face. She exudes everything from joy to quiet confidence. 

Choosing Studio Maternity Photography

If you’re looking for a Milwaukee maternity photographer, consider whether you’d prefer to do your session at home or in a studio. I do both types of photography sessions. Studio maternity photos hold a special place in my artistic heart, though. 

Once you’re pregnant (especially at the stage you’re planning maternity photos), you can kind of lose steam. Growing a little human is a lot of work! Opting for a studio session alleviates the pressure of feeling like your house has to be picture perfect for a photographer.

A studio maternity session allows you to be intentional with your session time. You can soak up the moment and get beautiful documentation. It also cuts down on visual distractions. During Denise and Jeremy’s session, I really was able to focus on them.

Nostalgic Film Maternity Photos 

Film photography is my favorite medium for documenting maternity sessions. Film feels authentic because it’s unedited and instantly nostalgic. You can hold a film photo of yourself and immediately remember what it was like to hold photos of your parents when you were a child. That’s a special kind of magic you only get with film.
