I’ve been lucky to document families in so many different environments over the years: photography studios, parks, and beaches. But in-home lifestyle family photography holds a special place in my heart. I’ve photographed with the Baun family several times, most recently at their home in Milwaukee. This session is the perfect example of how you can create nostalgic images in a cozy environment. Using film made these photos even sweeter.
I was honored to document this moment in the Baun family’s growth. Last time I saw Ali and Zack, they were glowing with anticipation of their baby to be. This time, they were bouncing their infant around with so much love and joy. I absolutely loved being able to document them through these different stages.
Ali and Zack know how to host a stylish event. I photographed their baby shower at Villa Terrace, and they went all out on gorgeous flowers, candles, and other thoughtful details. I hope I get to photograph more baby showers like theirs! You can read about it in this blog post.
So when I got the chance to do a more relaxed lifestyle family photography session with Ali, Zack, and their little one, I was so excited! This was a chance to document them at ease in their home. In-home sessions are magical because parents can focus on connecting with each other rather than the logistics of getting to and from photo locations.
Football fans might recognize Zack as a player for the Philadelphia Eagles. Ali and Zack like to spend the off-season with family in Milwaukee, so I met them at their home there. They spent time cozying up with their little one in the sunlit living room. These photos are so natural and nostalgic. You can feel the love that surrounds this baby every day.
Then we headed outside for the rest of the session. Ali spread out a blanket on a shady stretch of lawn where everyone could relax. It gave everyone a chance to interact with each other in very organic ways. There was no pressure to do anything other than what they normally might on a sunny Milwaukee morning. Their little one’s expressions are priceless!
Ali and Zack booked my Film Family Session. This includes:
Even though I offer digital lifestyle family photography sessions, I’m really passionate about the power of film for portraying the emotion of family life. I’ve started doing film-only mini sessions for this reason. You can see examples of what those look like in this blog post.
Film photography is about feeling, not perfection. As a photographer, I love this storytelling medium. Family life isn’t always glamorous, but those silly in-between moments are the ones that can end up meaning the most to us in the long run.
As part of this Film Family Session, I created a Super 8 film for Ali and Zack. Super 8 is a video format introduced by Kodak in the 1960s. It’s minimalist and sweet, like the home movies you grew up with (or wish you did). Like film photography, Super 8 video is a dream for unposed, intimate moments between family members.
Super 8 video and 35mm film are a great fit for lifestyle family photography because they give you the sense that you’re preserving this moment for future generations. Your child will hold this memory in their hands as they grow. Your grandkids will watch you laughing with your loved ones years from now. These images feel like home.
I’m so grateful that I got to document the Baun family multiple times in this season of life. There’s something really special about past clients seeking me out when they come back to town. Past wedding clients often reach out to me for parenthood and family photos. As our relationships deepen, I can help them feel at ease in front of my camera faster. It’s amazing to see!
